Pathway leading in to Lianhua Shan Park

On a fine late-spring or early-summer day, nothing beats a trip to Lianhua Shan, or "Lotus Hill," Park.

Whether you're interested in flying a kite, viewing some art, rowing a boat, climbing a hill, or just a enjoying a scenic view, this is one of Shenzhen's best outdoor destinations.

The park can be approached from several directions, but the easiest may be the main gate on Hongli Road at the intersection of Yitian Road. Shaonian Gong (Children's Palace) Metro Station on the Longgang Line (Line 3) or Longhua Line (Line 4) is near the gate.

Entering the gate, you'll pass a number of statues depicting Chinese literary figures. Ahead is a pleasant tea house where you can relax under shady trees. (If your party plans to climb the hill and you'd rather not, this is a great place to hang out.)

Curving left you'll see a lake where boats can be rented. There's also a snack shop there.

Turn right past the lake and start the long, slow walk up the wide road to the top of the hill. At the peak is the dynamic statue of China's late Paramount leader Deng Xiaoping, the "Father of Shenzhen," depicted striding purposefully into the future.

Also from the top you can see stunning views of the city on a clear day. Try taking one of the many smaller trails back down the hill for a more "wilderness" experience.

If you still have time and energy, go fly a kite! You can usually purchase one at a kiosk near the southeast entrance (next to the Guan Shanyue Art Museum) and fly it on the open ground nearby. The museum also makes for a peaceful indoor activity.

The park is open 24 hours; it's ideal for moon-viewing.
