You can pet and feed a baby cow at Guangming Farm
Shenzhen's city dwellers know that the outlying districts provide escape from the urban beat. But did you know that Guangming District contains a working farm where you can engage in a host of relaxing activities?

The Guangming Farm (Guangming Nongchang 光明农场 ) is the place. Located far from Shenzhen's center, squeezed between Bao'an and Dongguan, the place takes a while to reach, but that's the price you pay to get away from the city!

Peacocks galore at the Farm
The focus of the farm is cows. You can see them, pet them, and even buy a bottle of fresh milk to feed to a calf. Nothing revives memories of life on the farm like the smell of cows!

But that's not all: you can pick fruit (in season), ride ponies, see various kinds of plants and poultry (including peacocks), and, um, "grope" fish!

To tell the truth, I missed out on the fish groping. And the ponies were a bit too small for me to ride; they're better suited for kids.

But my wife and our friend and I just enjoyed strolling around, petting the animals, smelling the smells, and soaking up the good country atmosphere.

More energetic visitors might also enjoy grass skiing on a 300-meter course, archery, and bungee-jumping. You can then round out your visit with an outdoor barbecue.

Bus #325 starts at the Huanggang border crossing, winds through Futian, passes Xili and Shiyan, and ends up near the farm. Try Exit D of Shimin Zhongxin Station on Line 4, the only place it comes close to the Metro. Otherwise, take 392 from Windows of the World Station, and transfer to 325 in Xili.
